As people in public service, we know what a difference it makes when we elect leaders who have our backs. We deserve leaders who respect our work and that’s why we dig deep into the background and voting records of candidates and ballot initiatives seeking our endorsement. Where we, working in conjunction with AFSCME PEOPLE and the L.A. Angeles County Federation of Labor, are unable to find a suitable candidate or position, we make no recommendation.

California Ballot Measures

• Proposition 15 – YES   

Schools & communities first: increases funding for public schools, community colleges, and local government services by changing tax assessment of commercial and industry property.

 

• Proposition 16 – YES   

Affirmative action: repeals proposition 209 (1996), which prohibited the state from considering race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in public employment, education, or contract.

 

• Proposition 17 – YES   

Restores the right to vote to people convicted of felonies who are on parole.

 

• Proposition 18 – YES   

Allows 17-year-olds who will be 18 at the time of the next general election to vote in primaries and special elections. 

 

• Proposition 19 – YES   

The home protection of seniors, severely disabled, families, and victims of wildfire or natural disasters act.

 

• Proposition 20 – YES   

Increase penalties for certain property crimes and repeated parole violations — and make it more difficult for some convicted felons to qualify for early parole and release from prison.

 

• Proposition 21 – YES   

Expands local governments' authority to enact rent control on residential property. 

 

• Proposition 22 – NO   

Changes employment classification rules for app-based transportation delivery drivers.

 

• Proposition 23 – YES   

Authorizes state regulation of kidney dialysis clinics. Establishes minimum staffing and other requirements.

Amends and strengthens consumer privacy laws.

 

• Proposition 25 – YES   

Referendum to overturn 2018 law that replaces money bail system with a system based on public safety risk. (upholding senate bill 10, which created bail system based on public safety risks requires "yes" vote).
