FROM THE DESK OF PRESIDENT FORD
Dear Sisters and Brothers in DSB:
Thursday, April 11, 2024, is a very important day for us who work in the Institutions. This is the day when the California Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC) will determine if the Halls stay open or shut down. Your Executive Board is working behind the scenes on the phone with lawmakers and others to fight for this cause. It is important that the BSCC Board hear from Local 685 leadership, so the Local 685 Executive Board is sending me and Field VP Dwight Thompson to Sacramento to attend the BSCC meeting. As your President, I am reaching out to you because I need your help.
My intention is to make sure that those of you who work in the Institutions, at LP and SYTF (at BJNJH specifically), have a voice at this meeting. Therefore, I am requesting that you write a short statement – one paragraph only! – explaining why the Institutions should remain open. Please, a short paragraph only. DO NOT VENT ABOUT HOW UPSET YOU ARE. Specifically, state how we must have operational control in the Institutions and how officer and youth safety must be addressed for the Probation Department to be in compliance.
Please email your one paragraph statement to me at sford@afscme685.com. BJNJH officers can hand deliver the statement to VP DSO Lindsey or DSO Letcher (and/or email me). I need to have your statement via email or printed out NO LATER THAN TUESDAY, APRIL 9, BY 3:00 PM. This deadline is important and must be met.
Thank you for your assistance. This is how we get Union business done. We do it together.
