AFSCME Local 685 is only as strong as the members who step forward to get involved. As our profession faces unprecedented challenges, we are launching several member-driven committees designed to strengthen our union, protect our profession, and give members a direct voice in shaping the future of probation.

Whether your passion is officer safety, public advocacy, or communications, there is a place for you to contribute. Click here to sign up now!

Advocacy Committee

The Advocacy Committee will help ensure that the voices of probation professionals are heard where decisions are being made. Committee members will work to educate elected officials, community leaders, stakeholders, and the public about the critical role probation officers play in public safety, rehabilitation, and accountability.

Members may participate in public meetings before the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, Probation Oversight Commission (POC), Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC), and other forums where probation policy is discussed. The committee will also help build community support for probation services, advocate for resources, and promote policies that improve outcomes for the youth, adults, victims, and communities we serve.

Safety Retirement & Workplace Safety Committee

The Safety Retirement & Workplace Safety Committee is dedicated to protecting the well-being of probation professionals throughout our careers and into retirement. The committee will focus on workplace safety issues, staffing concerns, facility conditions, equipment needs, assault prevention, officer wellness, and retirement protections.

Members will work to identify safety concerns, develop recommendations, support legislative and policy initiatives, and advocate for retirement benefits that recognize the unique hazards and demands of probation peace officer work.

Communications & Media Committee

The Communications & Media Committee will help tell our story. This committee will assist with member communications, social media content, newsletters, community outreach, media engagement, and public education efforts.

Members with writing, photography, video, graphic design, social media, or public relations experience are encouraged to participate. The committee will help ensure that the public, policymakers, and our own members understand the important work performed by probation professionals every day.

Real change happens when members participate.
