On Friday, October 17, members of your Local 685 Executive Board met with Chief Viera-Rosa and senior probation management to address the reassignment of Camp Paige staff to Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall (BJN-JH), along with several other pressing issues affecting our membership.
The discussion was direct and productive. President Eddie Chism and Chief Viera-Rosa agreed to re-set the labor-management partnership and work collaboratively to identify real solutions to the operational and staffing challenges facing our department. The Chief committed to improving communication and ensuring that employees receive timely, transparent updates on issues that affect their work and well-being.
Reassignment of Camp Paige Staff
Your Executive Board made clear the serious concerns raised by members regarding hardship, transportation, child and elder care, medical appointments, and scheduling impacts resulting from these reassignments.
In response, the Chief agreed to:
Consider a compressed 40-hour schedule and other alternative work options for staff assigned to Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall.
Collaborate with Local 685 to review 38–39 slot schedules and develop a path to return affected staff from BJN-JH back to CVK.
Continue advancing the department’s professionalization plan — upgrading and reclassifying GSN and other staff positions to DPO I and II levels upon completion of juvenile services coursework through Glendale Community College or equivalent programs.
Investigate and address the ongoing parking and staff entrance issues at Los Padrinos.
Your Executive Board stood firm in demanding accountability and follow-through. The Chief agreed to continue this dialogue through regular follow-up meetings to ensure that commitments are met and members’ voices remain central to every decision.
We are encouraged by this step toward a more transparent and respectful working relationship — but let’s be clear: cooperation does not mean complacency. Local 685 will continue to fight for every member’s rights, safety, and dignity.
In Solidarity,
Don Washington
Chief Negotiator
